Sarnath Archaeological Museum
The Sarnath Archaeological Museum is one of the oldest site museums in India. It houses a rich collection of ancient sculptures, inscriptions, and artifacts from the Mauryan, Kushan, and Gupta periods.
The most famous exhibit here is the Lion Capital of Ashoka, which is now the National Emblem of India. The museum provides deep insight into India’s ancient Buddhist heritage.

Ashoka Pillar
The Ashoka Pillar was erected by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE. Although the pillar is now broken, its Lion Capital remains one of India’s most iconic symbols.

Mulagandha Kuti Vihar
The Mulagandha Kuti Vihar is a modern Buddhist temple built by the Mahabodhi Society. The temple features beautiful frescoes depicting the life of Buddha and offers a calm environment for meditation.

Sarangnath Mahadev Temple
The name Sarangnath is derived from “Sarang,” which is believed to be another name of Lord Shiva. According to local belief, Lord Shiva appeared here to bless his devotees, and since then the temple has become an important place of worship.
It is said that Sarnath itself was once known as Sarangnath, and the temple stands as a symbol of the area’s ancient Hindu heritage alongside its Buddhist monuments.
